Suture Types"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2>Suture Types<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two main types of suture material &#8212; absorbable and non-absorbable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-3 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-container-1 wp-block-column\">\n<h5>Absorbable Sutures<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>These sutures have different absorption times which impacts the healing time and the strength of the wound closure.<\/li><li>Absorbable sutures can be made from either mammals or synthetic materials. They may be treated with dyes or other coatings to allow for better absorption. The body digests <a id=\"post-477-_Int_FBybFu5E\"><\/a>these sutures using enzymes.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Surgical Gut<\/strong> <strong><strong>(select the + hotspots in the image to reveal information)<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"h5p-iframe-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"h5p-iframe-26\" class=\"h5p-iframe\" data-content-id=\"26\" style=\"height:1px\" src=\"about:blank\" frameBorder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" title=\"Module 7: Surgical Gut\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-2 wp-block-column\">\n<ol><li><a id=\"post-477-_Int_ilt4cds6\"><\/a> The surgical gut typically comes from the submucosal area of a sheep\u2019s small intestine, or from cattle or hog&#8217;s intestinal serosa.<\/li><li>The surgical gut sutures can be treated with chromium salts or remain untreated, which is known as the plain gut.<\/li><li>Plain gut sutures are typically used for the approximation of soft tissue or ligation, commonly used in ophthalmology surgery.<\/li><li><a id=\"post-477-_Int_osO4oU7K\"><\/a> Surgically treated gut sutures allow for slower absorption. This lets wounds continue healing while the suture remains intact.<\/li><li>Tissue enzymes are responsible for digestion and the absorption of the surgical gut.<\/li><li>These sutures come in alcohol solution wet packing to maintain their pliability. If the package is open and not <a id=\"post-477-_Int_oeOInPGa\"><\/a>used, the alcohol evaporates, altering its pliability. <\/li><li>If the suture is being used in ophthalmology procedures, it can be restored by immersing it in water or sterile saline. For other procedures, there is enough moisture in the tissue fluid to restore it. <\/li><li>Too much moisture can decrease the tensile strength.<\/li><\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5>Synthetic Absorbable Sutures<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>These synthetic braided and monofilament types of sutures provide wound approximation for two to three weeks due to the tensile strength. Then they are rapidly absorbed by the body.<\/li><li>There are also other synthetic polymers that can last up to three months before absorption, which allows even longer support for wound healing. This is generally used for oncology and elderly patients.<\/li><li>Hydrolysis is the process in which synthetic sutures are absorbed. Additionally, fibres can be dyed or left uncoloured. They can also be coated with synthetic or natural fibres.
