Determining Optimal Patient Position<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The safety of the patient is one of the most <\/a>crucial factors in determining the optimal surgical position. Proper positioning is vital to a patient\u2019s surgical outcome. It includes preoperative skin preparation, and sterile draping and provides optimal exposure and access to the surgical site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Determining the patient\u2019s position and positioning equipment is multifactorial. Considerations are based on:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The type of anesthesia the patient will be receiving,<\/li>
  2. The surgeon\u2019s surgical approach<\/li>
  3. The age, <\/a>height, and weight of the patient<\/li>
  4. Pre-existing co-morbidities (e.g., arthritis, paralysis, obesity)<\/li>
  5. Cardiopulmonary status of the patient<\/li>
  6. Pre-assessment findings such as skin integrity, joint mobility, and presence of joint or vascular prosthesis<\/li>
  7. Length of the procedure<\/li>
  8. The surgeon\u2019s preferences<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
